Overview: Du Cun Li was born in Tainan City, Taiwan, with an ancestral profile rooting back to Longxi District, Fujian Province, China. He left his homeland for Malaya in 1937. He was the headmaster of Sepang’s Overseas Chinese School and the head of the sports division of Singapore’s Tao Nan School. Du devoted his life to calligraphy, specializing in Zhuan, Li, Xing, Cao and Kai styles. He focused his effort on the teachings of calligraphy in his later life from the beginning of 1990s. His calligraphy inherits the legacy of Yan Zhen Qing (Tang Dynasty), drawing inspiration from ‘Yuan Jie Bei’ tablet calligraphy. He spiced up his calligraphy with features made popular by Hua Shi Kui of Qing Dynasty. He took calligraphy to the next level with an ingenious way, using ink-soaked cotton and his fist as the tools, instead of a calligraphy brush.
