Overview: ‘Pi Pa Xing’ is a masterpiece produced by Bai Ju Yi during the reign of Emperor Xiang Zong of Tang Dynasty in the year of 816. Bai was accused of abusing his power and as a result, he was demoted twice, to the posts of a Provincial Governor and later General, both in Jiang Zhou. The lengthy poetry that features a seven-word sequence was inspired by a Pi Pa (Chinese lute) rhythm played by a woman while he was seeing off a guest along a river approaching Chang Jiang (Yangtze River). The woeful rhythm reminded him of his own ordeals and that inspired him to produce the widely acclaimed ‘Pi Pa Xing’. Dong Qi Chang was a connoisseur of calligraphy and painting himself. Through his sharp observation skills, he summed up two schools of thought bearing the hallmarks of Northern and Southern styles of painting. His insights were an influential factor in the painting arena of the later stages of Ming Dynasty and beyond. His paintings are cleverly woven with his calligraphy virtuosity to revere the ancient wisdom, but they are not bound by the ancient rigidity. The 60-column ‘Pi Pa Xing’ is now a proud exhibit at Beijing Museum.

Calligraphy Style: Xing Shu
