Overview: Wang Duo was a highly distinguished calligrapher of late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. He is renowned for his mastery in ‘Zhen Shu’, ‘Xing Shu’ and ‘Cao Shu’ calligraphy styles. This masterpiece features a 7-word sequence ‘Xing Shu’ poetry originally written by Gu Ceng in “Feng He Chun Ri Chu Yuan Zhu Mu Ying Ling”, his flagship work. Inspired by exemplary calligraphy by Wei Jin with Er Wang’s ‘Xing Cao’ style as the driving force, Wang Duo’s calligraphy was also heavily influenced by Zhong Yao. He polished his skills further by studying Yan and Mi’s calligraphy. He always championed that: “One must comprehend the ancient wisdom in calligraphy in order to master the spirit of calligraphy.”
