Overview: Liu Yong was a Prime Minister serving two different emperors, Qian Long and Jia Qing. His calligraphy was fundamentally influenced by Yan’s school of thought in the beginning. He enlarged his calligraphy aspirations with influence from other calligraphers in the later stages. Liu’s calligraphy applies a thick-inked stroking technique generally. The sturdy strokes further exude the beauty of ‘black in fullness’ against a white backdrop. The dynamic contrast between ‘black’ and ‘white’, penned creatively by Liu, complements each other to form a perfect artistic concoction. The thickly applied black ink when combined with a serene white backdrop, it conjures up an unmistakable, strong identity exclusively belonging to Liu, who was affectionately known as the ‘thick-ink premier’ in those days.
