Calligrapher: Zheng Yi Feng (1911 – 1989)

Overview: Zheng Yi Feng hailed from Min Hou, Fu Jian and graduated from Fujian College. He was a war correspondent during Sino-Japanese War. As the war ended, he set foot on Malaya and dedicated himself to education. He was the headmaster of Sin Min Primary School in Sungai Petani (Kedah) and Sin Hwa Parit Buntar (Perak). Zheng was an adept calligrapher of different styles. This particular couplet bears the hallmarks of ‘Duo Bei’ tablet calligraphy. Even though it was written in ‘Xing Shu’ style, it boasts plenty of intensity and grandeur.

运交华盖欲何求？未敢翻身已碰头。

破帽遮颜过闹市，漏船载酒泛中流。

横眉冷对千夫指，俯首甘为孺子牛。
