Overview: Originally from Zhe Jiang, Huang Yao was an internationally renowned cartoonist in his lifetime, who lectured at University of Nanking, Nankai University and Fudan University. His ‘Bull-Nose’ comic was a hit across China. He settled down in Malaya in 1956 and continued to share his passion for comics, holding many educational comic exhibitions along the way. For many years, he was the principal of Sin Min Independent School. Huang Yao was one of the advisors and founding members of Persatuan Seni Tulis Malaysia. His awe-inspiring works were among the proud exhibits at the Kuala Lumpur Folk Art Exhibition (1981), Kuala Lumpur Porcelain/ Ceramic Art Exhibition (1985), the 4th International Calligraphy and Couplet Exhibition (1983) and the 5th International Calligraphy Exhibition in Japan (1984). Huang’s calligraphy and painting boast a strong scholarly background of himself, reflecting his literary and philosophical accomplishment. His very individualized works are equally forward-looking, pioneering calligraphy with contemporary art. His pictographs and Chu Yu Shu (a type of unconventional grass script presented through a unique form of courageous art invented by him) tend to catch viewers agape, knowing that he could even pen his calligraphy in a complete reverse manner. His ink-wash painting is uniquely amazing as well. Huang was good at redefining the essence of Chinese culture by cleverly incorporating the elements of folk customs into his works. Critics brand him an absolute gem in calligraphy and painting arena of the modern era
