Calligrapher: Chen Lei Shi (1919 – 2010)
Overview: Chen Lei Shi was originally from Chao An, China. He had a ‘Bo Tong’ byname. Chen was a famous Gu Qin (seven-stringed Chinese musical instrument rather similar to zither) grandmaster worldwide. His other credentials include being a noted author and calligrapher; a professor at Taiwan’s Chinese Culture University and Chinese University of Hong Kong (where he was chief curator of The Chinese Music Archive); an illustrious teaching career at Chung Ling High School (Penang) and Chung Hwa High School (Muar, Johor). One of his notable publications is ‘Ou You Lin Zhao’ (Glimpses of Europe). Chen drew inspiration from Wei Dynasty’s ‘Kai Shu’ tablet calligraphy, followed by Han Dynasty’s ‘Li Shu’ tablet calligraphy (eg. Zhang Qian Bei). It has a very special appeal befitting a scholarly cultured person.
