Overview: Chen Hong Shou was an accomplished man in the art arena, being one of the eight seal-carving paragons of Qing Dynasty spanning four different generations, known as ‘Xi Leng Ba Jia’. Chen’s seal-carving took inspiration from the greats of Qin and Han dynasties. Taking centre stage is his ‘Li Shu’ calligraphy, which amazes with vigour yet casual strokes. The composition is technically unrestrained while the flows are harmoniously woven. His indigenous style of calligraphy further redefined creativity in his era. This showpiece demonstrates dexterously constructed strokes, which are narrow yet graceful, Chinese classical oriented and making one feel relaxed looking at it. It bears the spirit of a reclusive scholar. The composition of Chen’s calligraphy may look free-and-easy at first glance, but it requires a great deal of dexterity.
Calligraphy Style: Li Shu
